Diverse Bird Life on Flinders Island
The 52 islands of the eastern Bass Strait offer a diverse range of habitat for birds from marine, wetlands and coastal dunes to heath and forest, together with relative freedom from man and predator animals, they make a haven for over 150 different species of birds.
The unique mix of birds among these islands is derived from the fact that they are the northernmost area for some southern species and the southernmost area for some northern species.
The diversity, from several species of albatross, petrels and shearwaters regularly seen offshore, through to migrating waders, stints curlews and sandpipers to the resident Cape Barren geese, ensures great viewing for the avid birdwatcher.
Raptors such as White Rumped Swamp Harriers, Wedgetail and Sea eagles make exciting viewing, also Green Rosella, Black Cockatoo and Tasmanian Mountain Currawong. Many small birds from New Holland Honeyeaters to Brilliant Fairy Wren abound, including the rare 40 Spotted Pardalote living in the wooded hillsides.
