Seasonal Activities: Spring

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Flinders Island as the change in the season heralds the start of new life on land and sea.

With warmer days and cool nights September – December is an ideal time to book a cosy cottage, hire a car and set off to explore the Island.

Special things to do in spring time on the Island include:

• Drive to Cameron’s Inlet to see large numbers of water birds and their young.
• Take a 4 WD tour into the Darling Ranges to see the variety of wild flowers that bloom at this time of year.
• Visit the Patriarch Wildlife Sanctuary to see baby wallabies in the pouch.
• Fish for squid off the jetty at Lady Barron.

Places to see at any time of the year include:

• The Furneaux Museum at Emita where you can learn about the history of the island, its people, wildlife and shipwrecks.

• Killiecrankie Bay – is famous for its Killiecrankie diamonds. This little haven is also perfect for a picnic and romantic stroll along the beach.

• Trousers Point – is the most popular beach on Flinders Island. It’s the one place you can be guaranteed to find a BBQ that is sheltered from the notorious roaring forties.

• Patriarchs Wildlife Sanctuary – is the island’s only wildlife sanctuary. It is home to wallabies, wombats, possums and a variety of birds, including the native Cape Barren Goose (see picture bottom left). Kids can pat the friendly wildlife and feed them straight from the hand.

• Wybalenna - Flinders Island is steeped in Aboriginal history and none greater than Wybalenna Chapel. It’s the oldest building on the island and has indigenous graveyard only metres from the chapel.

• Mt Strzelecki - is part of the famous Three Peaks Race, a sailing event held every Easter. This mountain stands 800 metres above sea level and is a great challenge for walkers of all fitness levels.

• Cameron’s Inlet and the East Coast this area -

stretches for miles in either direction. It is also renowned for its surf fishing; locals often catch shark and flathead right off the shore. So grab a rod, and have a go.

• Palana Beach – is the most northern beach on Flinders Island and is a popular holiday destination for both locals and visitors. Enjoy the soft rolling waves, BBQ facilities, and golden sand.

• Outer Islands

- there are 56 islands scattered across the north eastern tip of Tasmania, part of the Furneaux Group of which Flinders Island is the largest. We have some great local boat charters that will take you to these deserted islands. There also hundreds of shipwrecks scattered on the ocean floor, remnants of the pioneer days. The famous Continental Shelf provides you with some of the biggest and tastiest fish in Australia. And, if you come at the right time of year, you’ll be able to witness thousands of mutton birds (Shearwaters) flying into the sunset. An incredibly unique sight.
